SABAL PALMETTO PALM - Arecaceae Family

This Sabal Palmetto Palm is the state tree and is also the state symbol for South Carolina.

Can grow up to 65 feet in height, averages 20-40 feet

Pruning: Use a pole trimmer and only remove the brown and yellow fronds(leaves). Prune the stems away from the trunk. Do not remove green fronds. Remove any flowers, seeds or berries from the tree so energy will be conserved for tolerating any green leaf loss during pruning. Pull away any loose boots around the trunk by hand. Do not attempt to cut old trunk boots off with a saw because the trunk can be damaged easily.

CANARY DATE PALM - Arecaceae Family

Can Grow up to 50-60 feet in height

Pruning: You should only prune a Canary Date Palm in order to remove flowers, dead or rotting fronds or damaged fronds(leaves). The tree should not be over pruned. Over-pruning can shorten the trees lifespan, subject it to disease and stunt the trees growth. Be careful when pruning the tree in order not to damage the tree trunk. Damaging the tree trunk may not allow the tree to heal properly and could kill the tree.
